How to Declutter Your Garage to Make Space for Your Car

IMG_4076.JPG

Taking proper care of your vehicle will not only protect it from damage and prevent the need for costly repairs, but it will also ensure its resale value is maintained. This begins by protecting your vehicle from the elements by parking it in your garage.

While this sounds like an easy enough solution, the garage is often used as a storage room where extra belongings are often dumped. In an effort to declutter a cluttered home, people often toss the things they own into a space that is meant for tools and vehicles. This is such a prevalent problem that only 30% of Americans actually keep their car in the garage.

To help with that, we have created this guide to organizing and cleaning out your garage to make space for your car while ensuring proper storage of your valuables.

Declutter time

Cleaning out a fully filled garage is not something you can do in just a few hours. In fact, you may likely need to set aside an entire weekend (or even two!) for this job. If you have family members living with you, it’s a good idea to get everyone involved in the project. Not only will it divide the tasks among more people, it can help everyone understand whatever organizational system you choose to apply to your belongings.

The next important step is to go through absolutely everything. Every little trinket and doodad must be taken out, and every box that remains unpacked must be opened up. This will allow you to find things of value you might have misplaced, important valuables and documents that need to be stored properly.

Sort your items into the following categories: keep, donate, sell, and toss. Lay out these items together by drawing with chalk on a floor or designating areas of the garage. As a good rule of thumb, outgrown toys, broken items, expired household chemicals, and anything you haven’t used in two years or more should not be kept. It might be painful to let go of things that have a sentimental value, but it is often necessary.

Organizing time

After you’ve tossed out the trash and donated your excess items, it’s time to organize the items you’ve decided to keep. These should be sorted according to broad categories, such as tools, sports equipment, holiday decorations, and so on. These should be placed in visibly labeled clear tote bins. Not only are these easier to work with, but they are also usually airtight for better protection from pests and the elements.

Items that should never be stored in a garage include:

  • Paint. There is often no thermal protection in the garage, and can ruin the paint.

  • Propane. This should always be stored outdoors, as a leak can cause gases to gather in a room. Even just a minor spark can cause a fire or explosion.

  • Paper goods. These should be stored in airtight containers indoors, as they are magnets for cockroaches and other pests.

  • Refrigerators. Many people have refrigerators in their garage, but keeping this appliance here often results in greater power consumption. The lack of air conditioning in the garage often means that the appliance has to work harder.

  • Pet food. Possums, racoons, and other animals might sniff it out and chew their way into your home. Keep this indoors in sealed containers.

Because the purpose of a garage is to store your car, keeping your car protected from the elements is essential to keeping it well-maintained. With that said, your garage should always remain clean and organized.

3 Quick Tips to Declutter a Kitchen

One of the worst places to clutter up is the kitchen. Any buildup in the area can make it difficult to pinpoint a place to start cleaning. Whether it’s the appliances scattered, the spills and food byproducts, or the dirty dishes, these can often stack up and cause issues over time. Leaving the kitchen messy attracts pests and can damage the way a home smells and looks.

Other people have a messy kitchen full of old appliances and other unused items resulting from living in the home for decades. If you are struggling to declutter the kitchen because of trash and equipment in cabinets, it’s time to remove unused items. Here’s a quick guide to drawing the excess mess found in one of the most important areas of your home:

How to Do a Quick Declutter of the Kitchen

While it might seem like a daunting task because of your kitchen’s size plus all the grime and dirt accumulated throughout the years, you’ll be on your way once you start. Choose a spot, preferably from one end of the kitchen, and begin clearing out individual cabinets. Grab a few materials to help you with your decluttering, such as a trash bag, a box for donations and your cleaning supplies to do a deep removal of dirt and grime.

When you see your kitchen spotless and looking clean again, it will motivate you to start spending more time in it than dreading the sight of a deteriorating space. Here are some steps to pull through with the process:

1. Take It One Cabinet at a Time

There’s no use pulling everything out all at once because this will just end up getting you stressed out. The best way is to do things methodically and work your way through each cabinet. Doing this method will allow you to segregate what is trash and what can still be donated and used by other people. You can even put other items in a box for a garage sale, such as old plates or serving platters that you won’t ever use. Once you’re done, wear gloves and clean up each cabinet to remove potential droppings of pests and other accumulated dirt.

2. Work In Increments

Tackling things in periods of around 30 minutes to an hour each time will help you get things done quicker. Set your alarm to notify you when to take breaks, and try to work without distractions. Focusing will help you sort items and find out what is garbage to be thrown. You can also work slowly and then do all the cleaning of the space at the end. Finding what style and periods work best for you will help.

3. Clear Out Your Fridge and Pantry

We all buy excess items on grocery trips, and annually, we accumulate so many food products that end up being forgotten. Take time to sort your pantry, throw out expired condiments and canned goods, or even donate the ones that are still good but you won’t ever eat. Your freezer will also likely have plenty of meats and other frozen goods that have been around for years, so take time to clear these out and throw them away to make room. Then, add a magnetic board to write all your fridge’s contents so that you remember what you have inside and can therefore plan your meals accordingly.

Taking time to declutter a kitchen is a very liberating experience, as this is a space in a home that develops plenty of mess throughout the years. You might find that you’ve stocked up on too many appliances, have been gifted various tools and dinnerware that you won’t use, or even loaded up on useless food items on sale. Organizing this area will open the doors to more options for cooking and spending time in the space, as there won’t be a badgering feeling of clutter omnipresent.

4 Things to Know When Preparing Your Home for the Holidays

With changing colors, crisp air, and a certain lightness in the air, one thing is clear—the holidays are just around the corner. Whether you’re trying to come up with a good layout plan for your fairy lights or you wish to gather your collection of Santa figurines, a little advance organizing will help you prepare better.

An organized home will help keep the holiday stress away, especially since you’ll be bustling around trying to keep everyone joyful. Unfortunately, a clean and organized space may seem like a distant dream for many, but there are ways you can deck your home in holiday glory.

Your home at its tidiest state can be the best gift you can ever give yourself, especially once you’ve found the perfect spot for your Christmas tree—no matter how difficult this year may have been, celebrating Christmas is a testament to all the good things still left.

To help you get started, here’s a quick guide you can follow:

Downsize your decoration piles

You’ll likely be carrying boxes of holiday decorations from the garage or attic, but before unboxing everything, grab a pen and paper and list down your favorite items. You likely won’t have any need for those blue and green tinsels, especially if you have a box full of gold and red ones for use.

That said, make a little room for Christmas in your heart and give some of those decorations away. The things that no longer have a spot in your home should be given to people who need them. Embody the spirit of giving and gather holiday decors you no longer need—that said, make sure to deck your home in items you love the most!

Prepare a holiday kitchen

Your holiday celebrations will never be complete without the joy of food. If the kids are demanding your gingerbread cookies and famous hot cocoa, make sure to never forget about your kitchen spaces! You need to prepare your islands and cupboards for Christmas breakfast and dinner, so make sure to locate your cookie cutter and baking sheets for a stress-free cooking time.

You also need to make sure that your machines are in good working conditions, such as your ice makers and food processors. More importantly, however, make sure that your pantry is stocked with the Christmas ingredients, which include nutmeg, cinnamon, and even rainbow sprinkles!

Deep clean your bathrooms and guest rooms

Your relatives may be coming to your home, so make sure to prepare early. Don’t let the days pass you by, especially since your guest rooms and bathrooms will be home to living souls once more.

Clear out the closets and deep clean the bathrooms—you’ll want to make your spaces are completely habitable! In doing so, you make sure that you have enough room for holiday visitors—make them feel right at home!

Spreading The Holiday Cheer Through A Tidy, Organized Home

Contrary to popular belief, keeping the holiday spirit alive in your home doesn’t mean decking every corner of your home with decorations. Your Santa Claus collection will look lovely in the living room, but any other unnecessary items should be given away.

Your kitchen should also be ready for the holiday meals, while your guest rooms should be cleaned for overnights and holiday vacations. That being said, make sure to start organizing as early as you can! A clean and organized home follows a holiday festive mood—better to start now!

Declutter Your Home for a More Peaceful Fall and Winter

This season is expected to be full of joy and peace as the holidays approach; however, it’s usually not that! Getting organized with a big declutter session might be the last thing on your mind given the busy nature of this time of year—but it will save you so much trouble down the line. Prepping ahead will make sure you can handle anything that comes your way this holiday season.

1. Start Early and Get Past the Holiday Stress

While it’s quite close to the end of the year, there’s still plenty of time for the chaos of the holidays to ramp up. By sitting down and laying out your holiday calendar in front of you, you can figure out where to start with fall organization so that it transitions into a smooth winter.

Consider completing your holiday shopping and present wrapping weeks beforehand, or be more practical with your decorations—that way, you won’t get swamped by all the extra clutter. If you have guests coming to visit, then start clearing up those extra rooms used for storage by decluttering them in the process to get rid of the mess once and for all!

2. Sell or Donate the Clothes You Didn’t Wear

The beginning of each season is usually a good time to evaluate what clothes you did or didn’t get any use out of during the previous season. Fall and wintertime will give you a fresh perspective on your summer favorites, as well as the clothes that didn’t get much love—such as unworn bathing suits and sundresses. By the time spring and summer approach, you’ll have fewer unused clothes bursting out of your closet and even fewer accessories to keep up with.

Understandably, this can be one of the most overwhelming parts of cleaning up, so hiring a decluttering service to help might be your best option.

3. Store Out-of-Season Pieces Accordingly

Having storage space for your seasonal clothes will help you maximize the space you have in your closet and keep organized. It makes picking an outfit much easier and gives you plenty of breathing room too.

Not only can this get you into the mindset of organizing and preparing for the next season, but it will also allow you to see the clothing items you have that can be given away or sold.

4. Prioritize Space-Saving Storage Solutions

Storage is every declutterer’s best friend. It’s important to be discerning when going out to buy your storage shelves, bins, containers, racks, and others, as there might be smarter alternatives out there!

Try shopping in places you wouldn’t normally look and do a little extra research (especially on social media groups) to find the best storage solutions. For instance, instead of a traditional coat rack standing in the middle of a hallway, opt for a vertical set of hooks that will hold bulkier coats. You can also invest in adjustable drawer dividers, and smart folding techniques to make the most out of your space.

5. Streamline Your Morning Routine

Morning routines can be chaotic, especially if you have a family. Laying everything out the night before can lessen the stress you experience during the morning scramble. Get everything ready, from toothbrushes to clothes and even to your bags. You might even want to pack your children’s lunches the night before or prepare the ingredients for easy assembly! There should be a dedicated space where kids can pick up everything they need for the day, from backpacks to sports gear and projects.

The fall and winter seasons are upon everybody, bringing with it plenty of opportunities to celebrate the festivities (Of course, safely!). It can also be a good chance to get rid of the excess and practice a more mindful, organized approach to possessions, tasks, and priorities during the holidays. Decluttering isn’t just about creating a semblance of physical peace in your home; it’s about creating a sense of peace in your mind as well—making it ready to ring in the New Year!
