4 Things to Know When Preparing Your Home for the Holidays

xmas cheer pic .jpg

With changing colors, crisp air, and a certain lightness in the air, one thing is clear—the holidays are just around the corner. Whether you’re trying to come up with a good layout plan for your fairy lights or you wish to gather your collection of Santa figurines, a little advance organizing will help you prepare better.

An organized home will help keep the holiday stress away, especially since you’ll be bustling around trying to keep everyone joyful. Unfortunately, a clean and organized space may seem like a distant dream for many, but there are ways you can deck your home in holiday glory.

Your home at its tidiest state can be the best gift you can ever give yourself, especially once you’ve found the perfect spot for your Christmas tree—no matter how difficult this year may have been, celebrating Christmas is a testament to all the good things still left.

To help you get started, here’s a quick guide you can follow:

Downsize your decoration piles

You’ll likely be carrying boxes of holiday decorations from the garage or attic, but before unboxing everything, grab a pen and paper and list down your favorite items. You likely won’t have any need for those blue and green tinsels, especially if you have a box full of gold and red ones for use.

That said, make a little room for Christmas in your heart and give some of those decorations away. The things that no longer have a spot in your home should be given to people who need them. Embody the spirit of giving and gather holiday decors you no longer need—that said, make sure to deck your home in items you love the most!

Prepare a holiday kitchen

Your holiday celebrations will never be complete without the joy of food. If the kids are demanding your gingerbread cookies and famous hot cocoa, make sure to never forget about your kitchen spaces! You need to prepare your islands and cupboards for Christmas breakfast and dinner, so make sure to locate your cookie cutter and baking sheets for a stress-free cooking time.

You also need to make sure that your machines are in good working conditions, such as your ice makers and food processors. More importantly, however, make sure that your pantry is stocked with the Christmas ingredients, which include nutmeg, cinnamon, and even rainbow sprinkles!

Deep clean your bathrooms and guest rooms

Your relatives may be coming to your home, so make sure to prepare early. Don’t let the days pass you by, especially since your guest rooms and bathrooms will be home to living souls once more.

Clear out the closets and deep clean the bathrooms—you’ll want to make your spaces are completely habitable! In doing so, you make sure that you have enough room for holiday visitors—make them feel right at home!

Spreading The Holiday Cheer Through A Tidy, Organized Home

Contrary to popular belief, keeping the holiday spirit alive in your home doesn’t mean decking every corner of your home with decorations. Your Santa Claus collection will look lovely in the living room, but any other unnecessary items should be given away.

Your kitchen should also be ready for the holiday meals, while your guest rooms should be cleaned for overnights and holiday vacations. That being said, make sure to start organizing as early as you can! A clean and organized home follows a holiday festive mood—better to start now!

If the thought of organizing during the holidays may seem overwhelming, fret not—Rescue My Space has you covered. We offer you organization solutions to help transform your spaces, so allow us to declutter your space to make way for the Christmas spirit. Reach out to us today to learn more!

Declutter Your Home for a More Peaceful Fall and Winter

This season is expected to be full of joy and peace as the holidays approach; however, it’s usually not that! Getting organized with a big declutter session might be the last thing on your mind given the busy nature of this time of year—but it will save you so much trouble down the line. Prepping ahead will make sure you can handle anything that comes your way this holiday season.

1. Start Early and Get Past the Holiday Stress

While it’s quite close to the end of the year, there’s still plenty of time for the chaos of the holidays to ramp up. By sitting down and laying out your holiday calendar in front of you, you can figure out where to start with fall organization so that it transitions into a smooth winter.

Consider completing your holiday shopping and present wrapping weeks beforehand, or be more practical with your decorations—that way, you won’t get swamped by all the extra clutter. If you have guests coming to visit, then start clearing up those extra rooms used for storage by decluttering them in the process to get rid of the mess once and for all!

2. Sell or Donate the Clothes You Didn’t Wear

The beginning of each season is usually a good time to evaluate what clothes you did or didn’t get any use out of during the previous season. Fall and wintertime will give you a fresh perspective on your summer favorites, as well as the clothes that didn’t get much love—such as unworn bathing suits and sundresses. By the time spring and summer approach, you’ll have fewer unused clothes bursting out of your closet and even fewer accessories to keep up with.

Understandably, this can be one of the most overwhelming parts of cleaning up, so hiring a decluttering service to help might be your best option.

3. Store Out-of-Season Pieces Accordingly

Having storage space for your seasonal clothes will help you maximize the space you have in your closet and keep organized. It makes picking an outfit much easier and gives you plenty of breathing room too.

Not only can this get you into the mindset of organizing and preparing for the next season, but it will also allow you to see the clothing items you have that can be given away or sold.

4. Prioritize Space-Saving Storage Solutions

Storage is every declutterer’s best friend. It’s important to be discerning when going out to buy your storage shelves, bins, containers, racks, and others, as there might be smarter alternatives out there!

Try shopping in places you wouldn’t normally look and do a little extra research (especially on social media groups) to find the best storage solutions. For instance, instead of a traditional coat rack standing in the middle of a hallway, opt for a vertical set of hooks that will hold bulkier coats. You can also invest in adjustable drawer dividers, and smart folding techniques to make the most out of your space.

5. Streamline Your Morning Routine

Morning routines can be chaotic, especially if you have a family. Laying everything out the night before can lessen the stress you experience during the morning scramble. Get everything ready, from toothbrushes to clothes and even to your bags. You might even want to pack your children’s lunches the night before or prepare the ingredients for easy assembly! There should be a dedicated space where kids can pick up everything they need for the day, from backpacks to sports gear and projects.

The fall and winter seasons are upon everybody, bringing with it plenty of opportunities to celebrate the festivities (Of course, safely!). It can also be a good chance to get rid of the excess and practice a more mindful, organized approach to possessions, tasks, and priorities during the holidays. Decluttering isn’t just about creating a semblance of physical peace in your home; it’s about creating a sense of peace in your mind as well—making it ready to ring in the New Year!

living room.jpg

Have you ever walked around your house and thought, "Wow, I need to give this room a makeover and reorganize it!" If you’re ready to do that, good for you! But here comes the challenging part: you can't have the same system in organizing each room because every area in your home has a different purpose and vibe.

For some people, it doesn't take long to organize their home on their own, but for most people, reorganizing can be an incredibly grueling task to do alone. And for this reason, some homeowners call for assistance from home organizers to help them organize their homes.

If you're ready to organize your home, we've got you covered. Below is our ultimate organization guide to help you manage every room in your home. Let's begin!

KITCHEN

You want to organize your kitchen in a way that will maximize your counter space, reducing all the clutter on the counter and in the drawers. Because for most homes, the kitchen is the primary communal area, having a clean and organized kitchen will make your entire home feel like everything's in order and spotless.

Start by taking everything out of your cabinets and drawers, decide how to organize the space, and then decide which items should be kept in the kitchen. Store away kitchen tools that you occasionally use, and add organizing products to make your kitchen more functional.

Below are some organizing products that will help you organize your kitchen.

FAMILY ROOM

Another area that receives a lot of traffic and clutter is your family room. In this room, you'll find a lot of items, such as toys, video games, gadgets, remote controls, books, and a lot more.

The best way to organize this space is to work on it in stages which will help you get rid of all the clutter. Start by compiling all the items and organizing them by category in the first 30 minutes. After that, tackle each pile and place them in their designated areas.

BEDROOM

Your bedroom is the first place you'll see in the morning and the last place you’ll see at night. If it doesn't feel like a place you can relax in anymore, it's time to deal with the chaos.

Because the closet is usually the most cluttered room in the bedroom, it’s best to start decluttering that space first. If you are interested in how to organize your closet properly (click here)

After decluttering your closet, let’s focus back on the bedroom and declutter the nightstands and dresser. Only keep the items you need, use, and love.

Once your room is organized, you can do the same as the other rooms in your home. You’ll be surprised how easier it gets after each room.

KID’S ROOM

If you have kids, another area that needs major organizing is your kids' room. Because they have layers of toys, clothes, and other items, their room is always in need of organizing.

Having an organizing system that will help keep the clutter in their room at a minimum, is important while also keeping it kid-friendly. Organize and store all the toys in a way where your kids will easily find what they're looking for to avoid all the toys on the floor. You can also do the same with their clothes and their other items.

Besides that, you can encourage them to clean up their room with a daily game. This way, they will learn how to clean and organize their space at a young age.

5 Spaces That Must Be Decluttered on a Weekly Basis

No matter how hard we try, some spaces are just bound to be magnets for clutter. Instead of returning things to where they are properly kept, all too often, high traffic areas transform into drop zones for receipts, snail mail, and other miscellaneous items. While keeping the home completely spotless all the time is pretty much impossible, these spaces can actually be kept relatively clutter-free through routine organizing of at least once a week. Here are five spaces that must be decluttered on a weekly basis:

1. The Bathroom

When it comes to being clutter-free, the most important part in the bathroom is having enough storage. However, the cabinets and countertops are popular places where minor clutter tend to begin and build up. Because the ideal goal when it comes to bathroom countertops is to make sure the surfaces are clear, having designated bins for your regular used items will help keep the surfaces clean. For example, a bin for your makeup, a bin for your hair products and/or your face products, makes it easier to put things back, especially when you are in a rush.

2. The Bedroom

A common culprit of bedroom clutter is typically drinking glasses, worn clothes and shoes. To avoid clutter in this area make sure at the end of the day you put these items in their designated place. If you are someone who does not have the time to put these items away at the end of the day, at least dedicate time at the end of the week. You can take it a step further and add a phone reminder to prevent you from forgetting to declutter.

3. The Closet

To avoid a full declutter in your closet, when you remove your clothes, place them in their designated places. For example, designated places include the hamper, the closet rod or folded in a drawer. As long as they are put away the clutter will be minimized.

4. The Coffee Table

This is easily one of the most common clutter magnets in any house. It usually starts with mail that’s casually tossed with the intention of getting back to it later, except a day passes, then another. Other items that wind up like this involve face masks, books, clothing accesories, and sometimes, even keys. All of those items have their own proper place, so put them in it.

5. The Makeup Bag and Dresser

Within a week, unused eye products or extra lipsticks can find their way into the bottom of your makeup bag. They can also be left scattered on a vanity dresser. Neither of these things is ideal, so it’s always a good idea to make sure that you only carry what you need. In the same vein, make sure that whatever is on your vanity is stored properly. There are many sturdy makeup organizers in the market and to pick the correct one, a good rule of thumb is to make sure you measure the space it would go in properly.

Everything in its place is definitely easier said than done, especially with everyone so busy. However, the littlest things can make the biggest difference, and having a clutter-free home will definitely be a great mood booster. Every small step counts towards having an organized and neat living environment so its up to you to create it.

Our 4-Step Ultimate Guide to Organizing Your Closet

7534360D-B140-41A3-86D1-88C0B53B82D4.JPG

Are you stressed, overwhelmed or having trouble finding things in your closet? Are you experiencing a big milestone, you're moving to a new chapter in your life, or even starting a new project or job? All of these are great reasons to give your closet a makeover, but you may be wondering, how do I start?

Perhaps you saw a celebrity's closet space and like how they fixed their wardrobe, or maybe you watched organization videos online and thought, "I could do that." Either way, finding inspiration is the perfect jump-start to organizing your closet space.

If you're one of those who had the sudden urge to fix their closet, we've got you covered! This article is our four-step ultimate guide to organizing your closet. Let’s get to it!

1. CLEAR OUT THE CLUTTER

When you start organizing your closet, the first thing you want to do is take everything out which we like to call “PURGE”. When it comes to organizing your closet, its important to only keep the items you need, love and makes you feel satisfied and get rid of the items that honestly don't. Do this by trying your clothes on, seeing how they feel on you and then place them in the “keep”, “donate” or “trash” pile.

2. HAVE AN ORGANIZATION SYSTEM

Now that your closet is ready for your clothes, it's time to figure out how to organize your space.

  • Create categories. (pants, skirts, dresses, tops, etc..)

  • Color coordinate.

  • Add bins for loose items like belts, scarves, hats, etc.

When you are creating an organization system, make sure it fits your lifestyle. If you workout a lot, you are going to make space for your workout clothes. If you work in corporate America, most of your closet may be filled with business casual clothes. On the reverse, if you work from home like a lot of us nowadays, your closet may be filled with mostly casual clothes. Whatever your current lifestyle is, your closet should reflect that.

3. BE SMART ABOUT YOUR STORAGE

When you're buying new storage products for your closet, make sure you really need them. The number of products you find in the market can seem useful, but in reality, they may end up giving you more clutter than space.

Before you buy any storage products, make sure you identify the storage problem that needs addressing. For example, if you have a lot of scarves, adding them to a bin may help you organize and create a designated space for them. Besides that, you can do the same with other loose items you have in your closet.

4. REVAMP YOUR CLOSET

Outside of functionality, you can also make it aesthetically pleasing. Though is not required, having an aesthetically pleasing closet does help you maintain the organization in your closet. The quickest way to improve your closet would be to brighten up the space by changing the light. If you notice your closet space needs more improvements, try changing the paint color or even adding a nice rug. Of course having matching hangers and matching bins its always a plus. If you have the space, you can take it a step further and add a full length mirror to give the closet a more stylish look.

Now that you have a four-step guide to organizing your closet, it's time that you roll up your sleeves and start organizing it! If your closet is too much for you to do alone, you can always ask for assistance from professional organizers at Rescue My Space. We are experts in decluttering, organizing, and making your closet look beautiful. Check out our services here to learn more.

The Best Spaces to begin your Organizing Journey

Home organization projects can be truly exciting. Even though, when you’re living with a lot of clutter, the idea of putting away extra items and clearing your space can be daunting, once your space is organized you’ll no longer have to work on crowded countertops or even step on your kids’ toys. Even better, you won’t have to spend hours searching for your keys in piles of items!

You may be at a loss on where or how to start, especially when you start to face the mess in your house. If you’re facing the same dilemma below, you’ll find the best spaces to get started when organizing your home:

9E740D59-310D-4E04-9AEF-4E6DF90AB2DB-D4AD75D6-1647-405E-B1FE-CD421538992A.JPG

1. STORAGE SPACES

Here’s one trick worth remembering: don’t start with the spaces you commonly use. The tendency is that you’ll just find more things you’ll need to put away when there’s no proper space for them yet.

The best way to kickstart your home organization project is to work on your storage spaces first. Identify areas in your home you can use to put away objects and organize them. For example, good storage spaces are the garage, the attic, walls, an empty room, and/or a space that you hardly use. It’s a lot like clearing space in your fridge before you unload groceries.

Organizing your storage spaces first will make it easier for you to declutter other areas in your house.

2. COMMON SPACES

The next places you’ll want to look at are your kitchen, living room, and bathrooms. Because these are spaces you share with your family, it is best to bring them on board.

Another reason to start with these common spaces is that everyone in the household will start to see the home become more organized. This may encourage them to be tidier with their personal spaces as well, which brings me to the third point…

3. PRIVATE SPACES

Organizing these personal spaces requires the help of the person using them. On top of that, this also takes time and uses up a lot of energy. Just imagine: you’ll have to make a decision for each shirt or pair of shoes in your closet, and you’ll have to go through each paper in your home office.

An effective strategy when it comes to organizing private spaces is to do them on a weekend, where you have plenty of time. If you’re working on bedrooms, always go for the bedroom closet first. Sorting through closets often requires a wide space—they may even take up a whole room! Once you finish organizing your closet, then you can move to the bedroom

As mentioned earlier, make sure to involve everyone in the family, especially when it comes to their personal space. This helps ensure that their items are stored in the right places according to their preferences.

Organizing your home is a worthwhile activity, but it’s no easy task. Without the right strategy, you can end up feeling so overwhelmed with the mess to the point of giving up. Starting with the spaces mentioned above will help you get the ball rolling easily and actually clear up some space. As long as you keep up consistent work, you’ll be able to see a clutter-free and lovely home in no time!

3 Organizing Hacks to Declutter your Space

clutter1.jpg

It’s normal to deal with piled-up stuff now and then, but once the chaos of everyday life starts to pile up, it can add stress to your home living in multiple ways. Not only can it make an otherwise decorative room feel dull it can also promote a sense of disorderliness.

Putting things where they should be, however, is not as straightforward as it seems. Knowing trash from the items you love takes skill and time, both of which may elude many homeowners who don’t know the best way to get a head start on the decluttering process.

With that in mind, our simple organizational hacks below should simplify your experience and help you sort through the clutter as painless as possible.

Tip #1: Analyze Each Room and Set Organizational Goals

Decluttering your home without a plan in mind can easily make anyone feel lost; setting you back in your goals more than solving your organizational issues. Start by setting specific goals in each room to help you map out all the cluttered areas you need to prioritize. Doing this will help you tackle the clutter one room at a time, allowing you to maximize your energy and get effective results. Not to mention, it also gives your cleanup a realistic timeframe, which can help push you to move forward.

Tip #2: Outline a Sorting System

Once it’s time to sort through the items in each room, it’s best to have three boxes with you on-hand. This creates an opportunity to place your belongings in dedicated spaces using three categories: the container for items you will “keep,” those you will “get rid of,” and the rest you plan to “donate.”

This encourages you to decide which items are worth keeping, making it easier to distinguish your trash from the items you love. As mentioned above, it’s best to do this room by room rather than doing it at one time.

Tip #3: Organize Your “get rid of” Pile

After separating the items and putting them in their proper category, it’s time to analyze what you will do with your “get rid of” box. Throwing them all away in the garbage can be wasteful, so consider which ones should be recycled, donated, or thrown away.

For example, you can introduce a new life to your old electronics by giving them to EcoATM recycling kiosks in your local area. Clothes in good condition, on the other hand, can benefit charities in your neighborhood. If you want to earn a quick buck, having a garage sale can also be an excellent way to squeeze more value from your loved items.

Living in a cluttered environment can make you feel stressed in more ways than one. Items can easily get lost and compromise your morning, while other forms of clutter can ruin your day.

Organizing your home seems tiring at first glance, but adopting some decluttering hacks can do wonders in taking the overwhelming feeling away from organizing your space. The tips above should help point you in the right direction and take your organizational skills to the next level.

5 Small Spaces you can Organize Today

Staying home is a concept we are still trying our best to grasp. Because we live in a society that is constantly on the go, the thought of staying put and limited access to “outside” increases anxiety levels and just makes us go crazy…. at least it does for me. Don’t fear Judi is here to help you get out that rut and start organizing your house. In decrease overwhelm, the focus today will be on 5 small spaces in your home. This way we can get through the easier spaces so we can work our way up to the more difficult ones.

Now let’s start with my favorite of all… Drawers.

#1 D R A W E R S

To anyone who is having difficulties figuring out where to start organizing, I would definitely start with drawers. Because drawers are typically one of the smallest spaces in our homes, this is the perfect place to get organized. First things first, it’s important that you chose the drawer you will be focusing on and only work on that one. Make sure you dedicate at least 1 hour to this process so you can finish it completely.

After you’ve chosen the drawer you want to organize, you will next take everything out. You may want to have a few extra trash bags (or something similar) and a collecting bin around you because you may come across items that belong in another space or items you will be letting go. Once you’ve determined which items you’ll be keeping (items you love and need) then you can place those items back in your drawers in an organized fashion - file folded, color-coordinated, stacked, or placed inside of a drawer organizer.

#2 M E D I C I N E C A B I N E T

med cabinet.png

Probably one of the best storage systems in the home, the medicine cabinet is both small yet powerful. Whether your medicine cabinet has a mirror or is plain jane like mine, organizing this small space is the best place to organize especially if you’re finding it difficult to start organizing.

Just as before, after choosing the medicine cabinet you’ll be working in, take everything out. Once everything, is out this is the perfect time to wipe it down and clean it since it’s probably been a while since it’s been touched. After going through your items and only keeping the items you love and/or need, you can put them back in an orderly fashion. I added these wonderful organizers to both shelves so I can separate my face products from each other which will make selecting and applying them so much easier. Adding a label for easy identification is the cherry on top!

#3 K I T C H E N C A B I N E T S

Arguably amongst myself, this is my favorite place in my home and probably the quickest space to organize in my home. Though overlooked, kitchen cabinets are the focal points in our kitchen which means its important for them to be organized. I personally consider them to be small spaces compared to other spaces in our homes, which is why they’re on this list. Working with one at a time, choose the one that’s less daunting and as before, take everything out.

If you’re working in a cabinet that holds your dishware, I would suggest creating categories for each type of dishware (plates, bowls, saucers, etc)… This will make the decision making so much easier because you’re able to see the number of each dish you have in your possession. Let’s just say if you are a family of 1-2, the most dishware you should have is no more than 12 - I know! Trust me, the less you have, the easier it is to clean them and keep them organized. After going through your items and only keeping the items you love and/or need, you can put them back in an organized fashion (stack them, color coordinate, etc).

#4 C A R T R U N K

Being someone who loves a clean and organized car, the current state of my trunk has my anger meter very high - I have a lot of returns and no one is accepting returns at the moment… FUN!

Because our vehicles are an extension of our homes, there’s no way I would have not included it in this list. Bypassing the interior part of our vehicles, the trunk is a small space that needs love but tends to always neglected - not anymore. As mentioned before, the first step is to take everything out. Because you are working outside or in the garage, you may want to lay something down on the floor to protect your belongings. Once everything is out, decide which items will be kept in your trunk and place them back inside.

Rule of thumb : Only have items that you use or need in the car. You may not use your reusable grocery bags in the car but they are more easily accessible then storing them inside the home. Items I keep in my trunk is my emergency kit, car cleaning supplies, grocery bags, some organizing equipment and car accessories (jumper cables, car jack and etc..).

Adding bins or a trunk organizer will help you maintain the order and keep it organized. Check out my Amazon Storefront to see the trunk organizer I use in my car below.

#5 B A G S (P U R S E, W O R K B A G, L A P T O P B A G)

Another extension of our homes are our bags. Trust me, you can always tell the cleanliness of someone’s home when you look inside their bags and I don’t just mean purses. Just like our homes, it’s very important we keep our bags organized as well. When your bag is organized, you’re able to find things quickly which saves you time when looking for something. Plus, it’s a small space that again is always neglected.

With that said as before, take your bag and dump it out. If it’s been a while since you’ve cleaned it out this is the perfect time to do so. As you’re looking at all your items, let’s think about what you need to keep in your bag and not what you want in it. Of course it all depends on what you deem as important but keep in mind that everything does not need to be inside your bag. Once you’ve determined what you want to keep inside your bag (again these are items that need to be in your bag) you can now put those items in your bag. If your issue is not having enough compartments or pockets, I’d suggest either getting a new bag with those characteristics or adding a bag organizer or pouches to create division.

Feel free to check my Amazon Storefront to see bag organizers that may work for you.

bag org.png

The silver lining with today’s current circumstance is that we are now forced to slow down and focus on things we otherwise would be putting off for the right time. Now is the right time so if you are very overwhelmed and it’s difficult to find a organizing starting point, small spaces are the best places to begin your organizing journey. Take a stab at one of the spaces I mentioned and let me know how it goes!
